The Secret of Becoming a Successful Freelancer

How I started as an Online Freelancer

It was five years ago when I started my research about online jobs. At first I couldn't convince myself that earning online could be possible so after signing up to several online workplaces like Elance, Guru, RareJob and Upwork, I just stopped believing that these sites are real as I never had any chance to get even a single job offer despite the numbers of applications I've sent. To make the story short, I surrendered!

From the very first day, since I got married, I made a promise to myself, I will never be a plain housewife.  Please don't get me wrong because I have nothing against being a plain housewife but I believe this title only belongs to those who were born rich, or those who have found fortunate partners in life, they indeed do not need to work to have a good life. My situation was different from them, my husband was working in a factory as a warehouse supervisor that time. The salary wasn't that good and we had no other choice but to borrow money from the company's lending organization just to survive. We were able to live that way...borrow, earn and pay, it's been a chain reaction for several months until we finally realized that what we were paying was the interest alone and the capital of the borrowed money was still intact.

Being in a difficult situation made me think again, I had to act to save our financial status. Being a mom of 3, without anyone to count on to assist me with the kids, getting a job has been a struggle so I got into online searching again. I told myself that this is the only possible way for me to help my husband to provide for the family while taking care of my three little ones. This time I was aggressive, I saw a different me and I loved what I was seeing.

The first thing I did was learning, I enrolled in different free online courses which are related to online freelancing such as Data Entry, Transcribing, Virtual Assistance and General administrative support. While studying, I started practicing what I learned and this time, in a more appropriate way.

To make the story short, after 2 years of being hesitant about it, I had my first project in Upwork and from then on, the offers continued flowing. I also had some short-term projects with Elance (now merged with Upwork) , and Guru.

Tips on How to Become a Successful Freelancer

  • First and foremost, know your skills. Your skills are your main investment in this industry, you have to develop and add more as much as possible.
  • If you think your skills do not apply to online freelance jobs, learn it! Just like what I did, I used to work in a factory doing some basic paper works and monitoring the production line and these tasks are very far from what I am doing now. So I looked for online tools and there are lots of them on the web, you can try Alison, Coursera, Udemy and GO1.
  • Believe in your self, no further explanation as the phrase tells it all.
  • Be patient, nothing you can get in just a snap of your fingers. If you invest time, effort plus the heart, nothing is impossible!
  • Always have a positive attitude. Always keep in mind that attitude plays a very important role to one's success. If you apply for a job, you'll make the very first impression by your attitude so make the most of it. A person with a good attitude has range of thoughts regarding their employment. They are constantly looking for better approaches to problem solving, and ways to enhance a workplace that will benefit everyone within a company.
  • Aim for being at your best, and think about earning as just a bonus. This way, you are building your reputation and building a very good relationship with your clients and without knowing it, you are building a great profile status and earnings will continue to flow.
  • Pay it forward. Every time someone would ask me to be their mentor, I would not forget to remind them that once they become successful,, they should pay it forward or help other people by sharing tips cause I believe that if you become a blessing to others, you will forever receive it.
If you will ask me how my life is going on after almost 3 years of being a freelancer, I am very proud to say that my husband had finally quit his job as a Warehouse supervisor and is now doing his own business from the fruits of my hard-work as a freelancer. I have one regular job as a Customer Success Representative in an Australian company and two other part-time jobs in Upwork. Our life is going smoothly, we can provide for the kids, better than we could then and most of all, we have lots of quality time together as I do my work at home while my husband has a small space in front of our house for his business. Freelancing may not be for everyone, but once you heard your heart saying "go for it" then you should follow what your heart says. That's all and Good luck!
